For all its easily identifiable Gothic elements, however, part of the terror of this story is its vagueness. Fans of gothic literature have been spoiled the last few years as Mike Flanagan has modernized and excellently adapted historic literature pieces like The Haunting of Hill House (novel by Shirley Jackson) and The Haunting of Bly Manor (based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James). The Fall of the House of Usher possesses the quintessential -features of the Gothic tale: a haunted house, dreary landscape, mysterious sickness, and doubled personality. ![]()
